Getting back into sailing after 25 years with a 21 Irwin. Don't plan to race, just day sailing. Boat only has a compass. What's a good combo for course, depth and speed? Thanks for any suggestions.

I just did this for my boat (knotmeter and depth sounder were trashed)...
Signet used to make the IS20 combi/wind... however, I did find, and am installing a speed, depth, temp, and wind...

Listen I know these people for nothing other than they had what I wanted in stock, Here is where I bought from http://simrad.factoryoutletstore.com/details/112418/simrad-22098529.html?category_id=56200... and that combo is about $400 cheaper than a newer Raymarine or Signet combination... Obviously the newer models are slightly nicer.

I'm just installing it now, but I can say it works...

I literally was just testing the wiring today... Lots more to do yet, so this was merely testing the transducers... I'm integrating a TP22 tiller pilot as well. Just mounted the bracket to the mast head for the wind transducer, but I have to run the simnet up the mast yet, I have tons of work for the boat, so I'm making slow progress. Hoping for a snow day tomorrow so I can spend more time on it.

Wind may be a bit of overkill for a 21-foot boat, if you don't plan to race. And you probably don't really need all the interconnectivity (NMEA 2000) of the higher-end models.

You can get the Raymarine i40 bi-data display (single display giving depth + speed) with thru-hull transducers here in the Sailnet store for $350, before rebate.

And if you have an iphone you can always download Navionics, buy a Lifeproof waterproof case and use it for course (I assume for course, you are looking for a chartplotter with GPS). Otherwise, there are a number of smaller, less expensive (<$500), chartplotters or GPS units on the market ... like the Garmin handhelds or a fixed unit, such as the Raymarine Dragonfly, Lowrance or Standard Horizon that you could mount on a swing-out arm in the companionway.

Make sure you've got an effective way to maintain a properly charged battery!

Do you sail in shallow water? Your profile does not give any information. A hand held GPS like a garmin will be about all you need, unless shallow water lurks about, then a depth meter would be nice.
