Not far, but it does see forward. Enough to see your way into a lagoon perhaps?

Seeing ahead for one or two boat lengths isn't all that much notice. Nice if there were no charts where one was going, I suppose.

Forward looking and 3D sonar was introduced many years ago by Hummingbird. It was pretty incredible, but as stated above, the range was a bit limited. It was primarily designed for recreational anglers and provided them with a 3D view of the bottom structure where large fish may be feeding and hiding.
