Hello, all!

I've recently (January) taken the US Sailing beginner and advanced courses here in San Diego and now am about to buy my second keel boat! It's a 77 Macgregor 22 in absolute pristine condition. Even has original cushions that look like they've never been sat on and original bottom paint that is still shiny! Even the keel has barely any rust. This boat must have sat in a garage for 30 years. I was looking for a Catalina 22 but couldn't pass this one up for $1800. The only "issue" I've questioned is that it doesn't have a jib, only a Genoa. I still have my jib from my wrecked Macgregor 21 that the insurance company is going to pick up any day now but I'm not sure if this will work on my 22? I'm guessing to pull it all the way to the top I'd just have to extend the tack a foot or two with a short length of rope right? Of course I'd lose sail area but it would work right? Or do I even need to bother with pulling it all the way to the top? Would it matter? I'm not looking to race or anything just want to cruise safely. Thanks for any insight.

If the sail is shorter on the forestay than your existing genoa, just fit it to the tack and raise it normally. The head of the sail will simply be lower at the top and that isn't a problem.

It'll just be a smaller sail. Something you'd want in heavier air anyway lacking roller furling. I had 120%, 100%, 70% and 50% jibs on an O'Day 22. The 70% and 50% jib were smaller jibs that I bought for heavier winds and just raised them to their limits.

Use the jib halyard to supply tension. Raising the foot of the sail will affect how you trim it and it will be easier to trim and maintain airflow with the foot in the correct position. Worse that happens with the shorter jib is you'll be acting like a fractional rig rather than a masthead (assuming your boat is a masthead setup based on your description). Won't affect sailing at all except to depower the boat.
