Hi All
I have a mini transat with a NKE Gyropilot 2 autopilot. It is a pretty sophisticated bit of kit and the boat can steer from information on the wind speed and wind angle and pitch of the boat (it knows if the boat is surfing) . However I do not have a display that will show the wind speed and angle. Can anyone recommend one that will accept a NMEA 0183 input?
The rest of the instrumentation is Cetrek Cnet 2000 which is ok and will display the wind angle via NMEA but not the speed. It is a slightly dated system and they don't make it anymore but I dont want to have to replace it as it works for the log and depth, so I would rather keeps it separate.
So I need something that will work with the NKE MHU, any ideas?
Thanks Rupert

Hi Bert,
Thanks for the reply. I checked out your link and I notice that this instrument has an NMEA output. Does it have an NMEA input too and will it display wind speed and angle via an NMEA signal from another device?

Also, if you are involved with the company, would you know where I could get one in the UK or France?

Thanks a lot for your help,
Rupert

Hi Rupert,

The WSD110 wind display has two NMEA 0183 inputs, one for wind speed, wind angle and air temperature and one for vehicle speed (usually boat speed) so the WSD110 can calculate and display true wind speed and true wind angle if the vehicle is moving. There is also an NMEA 0183 output to output said calculated data.

You can order the WSD110 through the CruzPro distributor in the UK (Marine Energy Solutions Ltd.) but they do not normally stock the WSD110 and will have to order it from New Zealand.

Cheers,

Hi Rupert,

The RP110 NMEA 0183 data repeater is not particularly well suited for displaying wind speed and direction information because it can only display one set of data at a time. You are much better off with the WSD110 wind speed/direction display. If you are not able to order the WSD110 direct from Energy Solutions you can order it direct from CruzPro Ltd. in New Zealand (CruzPro electronic boat instruments, alarms, digital gauges and monitors).

Cheers,

Bert

Does your display need to be able to set calibration parameters on the wind instrument? If so that would usually mean going with a display from the manufacturer.

Second Wave in Seattle had a couple of cheap (~$100) Simrad IS15 NMEA 0183 displays last weekend. I think they would do what you want. Most MFDs will also do it, and I'd be sort of surprised if you have a high end NKE autopilot and no MFD.

Hi Alex,
Thanks a lot for the reply. By MFD, do you mean multifunction display? I have one that sits on the tiller and it controls the pilot which can sail by compass, wind angle or rudder but it does not display the wind (even though the Gyropilot reads this information to steer when in that mode.) There is a newer MFD that will do the job but it is £1000. I have a slot for a standard square instrument that is currently free, so could dedicate it to a wind instrument if I can find one that is compatible.
A very helpful marine electronics expert in the UK has mentioned the possibility of using the Simrad IS15 too. I suppose there will be no way of actually knowing unless I test it, but if I go down that route I will update this post as it has been a bit of head scratcher to get this far!

Cheers, Rupert
