This is a 500mb (high altitude) analysis. What did the surface analysis indicate?

The surface analysis is showing a big lower level low also which is often, but not always, the case. It's interesting at the change of seasons to watch the retreat (or not!) of the 500mb 564 line. It almost invariably does a good job of predicting the weather trend out 48-96 hours in these parts. Is it useful in this manner out West as well?

I use NOAA weatherfaxes regularly. The 500mb analysis shows the jet stream, which often separates the lows and highs.

Since we have fewer land effects before the systems hit us, the weatherfaxes might actually be more reliable for us.
