If I remember correctly North made two types , spool up drum and a continuous line drum . I once sailed on a boat with the continuous line , we reefed it but the line would not hold and the sail would unfurl . It wasn't my boat so I didn't give it much thought . A friend of mine told me we were doing it wrong and that the unit will reef fine . I'm sorry this was over 10yrs. ago and I forgot what the guy said . But just in general make sure the bearings are free .
