I have a 34 Oday with a cabin top traveler that the previous owner had disabled. There is no hardware left except for the car (which is missing it's pulleys) and two rubber blocks on either side that keep the car from sliding along the track. I'm not sure if it's better to find the parts to replace the original or just replace the entire thing, any thoughts?

To upgrade the traveler on my 302, I used the Lewmar replacement kit. Original was curved across the cabin top and Lewmar is straight, for I made a filler from mahongany and through-bolted the Lewmar on top of the original. Think about up-sizing - the center boom main sheet attachment adds to the loads.

If you're not certain who supplied the original, I think I'd go with a Garhauer traveler setup and simply start over.. pretty good bang for the buck with them.

Garhauer always! They were happy to make the track I wanted for my boat 5.5 ft.

not cabin top but well worth the effort instead of messing with old stuff.
err.. the line are now one color :)

Thanks for all the info, dsmauney-which car do you have, 4 wheel with control sheaves? Any experience with the car with cam cleats attached? Better or worse than cleats at either end of the track?

Good Gawd:eek:... DO NOT go with the Rig Rite Nicro-Fico Traveler Solution! :eek:Rig Rite will charge over $500 for the car alone!:hothead

I had the same crappy traveler on my O'day 35. I bought the Nicro-Fico traveler with sheaves from Rig Rite. I then contacted Guido at Garhauer for the control ends with cam cleats. Guido was shocked at what I paid for the car, and said that I could have had a whole new track, car, control end, cam cleats and line, for less than I paid for the car alone.

Bottom line; CALL GARHAUER.

PM me if you want to get into specifics.

I assume that this is what you have (it is what I had);

This is what I now have;

That car cost a fortune.

That is the original track.

Those nice polished stainless steel fittings are Garhauer fittings.

That is exactly what I have, are you saying it's cheaper to replace the entire thing? The Garhauler traveller is $650, not sure if it includes the cam cleats on the end. Do you know why they weren't completely outfitted from new? I figured the PO had removed it, but couldn't understand why.

That is exactly what I am saying. I don't usually quote specific prices (in an attempt to protect the guilty), but Rig Rite charged me $555 for that traveler car alone! (mods - please feel free to edit if you think I've shared too much)

I don't know which one you are looking at, but the Garhauer traveler kits included; track, car, line, cam cleats, blocks and track ends. Call Garhauer and let them help you.

Why they weren't outfitted when the boat was new... Let me put it this way; O'days were built as a solid boat to a specific price point. There was a lot of cross pollination between the design specs and workers at O'day, and Pearson (and to a lesser extent Cape Dory and Bristol). However, they cut corners where they could (or where owners allowed them to), and one of those areas was the traveler. (I am not a fan of the outhaul either...)

Just to answer your questions:

Checked and my traveler is the following.
Nicro-Fico 1169 Traveller

Quick photos of my setup are attached.

I cut the cam cleats off the ends of the traveler and mounted them on the coach roof closer to the cockpit. Mine still works well so still using it. Led traveler lines aft through a grommet in the dodger and then through bulls-eye fair lead then to cam cleat on each side.

I use Garhauer stuff when ever I can or replacing stuff. Can't beat quality, service and price. Hope this helps.

Yes - with a cabin top traveller it makes sense to lead the lines aft.

Here i my setup
There is a sheave installed in the front of the teak beam

The traveller control lines is lead to two of these cleats, the nice ting with these is that it's easy to remote operate, I can operate the these from the wheel (where I also can adjust the main/head sail sheets).

Yep, my boat has the Nicro-Fico 1169 traveler track. I bought the NF-1162 car from Rig-Rite, and the rest of my setup through Garhauer.

What I have is the equivalent of a something between a Garhauer MT-3 ($275) and a MT-1 ($395). By calling Garhauer I am sure that they could have added a becket to the MT-3 car, for under $300. If I could do it over, I would have just bought a MT-1 from Garhauer, had a better traveler, and saved $150.
