If you don't already have a charging circuit on your outboard, but you're lucky enough that it already has generator coils installed, you might consider adding the missing rectifier/regulator to charge your battery bank.

That was the case recently with my 2004 8HP Yamaha 4-cycle. It wasn't hard to find the part (used, even) and install. Now my battery can recharge with 2-5amps whenever we're motoring. It might not meet all of our future on-water charging needs but for only $71, it's worth a try. Time will tell.

Glad you found it helpful, Eric. The upgrade has worked great for me since installing it.
I'm having a bit of trouble identifying exactly what I need for this addition. I have a brand new Mercury 4hp four stroke that, according to the manual, can accept this conversion. What exactly is the name of what it is that I have to add?

I don't know about Mercury outboards but they should basically be the same. You need two things on it: the generator, which consists of one or two coil assemblies; and the regulator/rectifier, which is basically a box that plugs in between the generator and your boat. There might be related wiring and brackets needed too.

You should be able to go to your Mercury dealer's parts department and they can sort it out for you. Or, you might be able to find the part numbers online like here.

Try this:

Tohatsu Repair Kits

I had a 35 HP Evinrude with charging/electric start. A volt meter showed a slight increase in voltage over the static charge, but only at high RPM's.

All the specs I have seen say from about 5 to 6 amps, which is not much.

Looks like you would need the alternator & rectifier kit, a dealer should know
