Pacific Seacraft Portlight Gaskets

19056 Views 52 Replies 20 Participants Last post by  MarcHall
Some time ago I thought that there was a thread, or the old email distro, on the gaskets to replace on the bronze/stainless portlights.

I thought someone had a size and spec for them and said it could be ordered through McMastet-Carr.

Does anyone have knowledge of that or could point me in the right direction?

Cheers,
Ryan

I think that was me... I ended up with a rubber tube from McMaster Carr - I think 3/8" diameter... 3 years later and they still seem to be holding up well. Not sure I can dig up more specifics about the gaskets, but will forward anything I find.

i think it depends on our port types. I have the "old" oval style and think they take 5/16 square gasket material. I could be wrong though as i'm doing this off the top of my head. JP may have PSC portlight gaskets all figures out though
I also used the McMaster Carr 5/16" square silicone bar. Here is the ordering information:

5508T25 SILICONE RUBBER BAR, 5/8" THICK, 5/8" WIDTH, 60A DUROMETER

John,

Thanks, that's it. I actually randomly came across that info this morning in the old email distro!

Since this is a job we need to do on Jo Beth, I checked the McMaster-Carr site for info and found the part # has changed. here's what I got:

Extreme-Temperature Silicone Rubber 5/8" Thick, 5/8" Width, 60A Durometer
This item is no longer available. We suggest:

5508T45

Differences:

5508T45
Tensile Strength: 700 PSI

5508T25
Tensile Strength: 1000 PSI

A slight difference in tensile strength, no biggie I suppose. Thought I'd post as a FYI...

gasket size to match PS25 oval portlights

Would this same size work for oval bronze portlights in a 78 PSC25? Just took them apart last night.
I'm gonna save the info in this thread for a future date I have to replace my gaskets. It's great that the PSC Community here at sailnet is so active and helpful.

Bill:
Thanks for the McMaster replacement p/n. FYI, it appears that the replacement gasket is red in color. Link here.

Summercamp:
I'd suggest measuring the actual gasket off your PSC25 if you've got them apart already.

Thanks - I didn't even look at the color!
Hey folks,

Good info here.

One suggestion when posting supply/source info, is to clarify which style portlights/gaskets you are referring to. I.e., the older style "ovals" or the newer style "rectangulars".

I think the gasket size and shape will be different for each.

P.S. By the way, here is some contact info for Whitewater MArine, the O.E.M. supplier for the older style oval portlights. I was able to get perfect-fit replacement gaskets from them when I rebuilt the portlights on our Dana 24 a number of years ago, at a very reasonable cost. I haven't had need to contact them lately, so I don't know how current this info is:

Bronze port adjust

If you are replacing gaskets on the older oval bronze ports; don't forget to adjust the tension screws on the upper pivot bar's. The ports need to close with even tension on all faces of the gasket.
I wanted to confirm that the outer sealing gasket is a separate piece from the material on the inside of the glass. Can someone confirm?

Cheers,
Ryan

I've been following this thread since it started as I am also in the process of replacing the gaskets on my portlights. I have a 1990 37. My portlights are the rectangular New Zealand version. If you look at the lens, there is a small logo on the lower right corner which mentions new zealand.

These gaskets are a single piece. They are moulded to the frame and have a channel to hold the lens as well a material to form the seal. Finding a direct replacement for the gaskets would be awesome, but I have had no luck in finding a replacement.

Thanks to the link for McMaster Carr I found on this thread, I have a small pile of different gasket material in my basement - I have samples of perhaps 15 different gaskets.

The solution I am currently in the process of installing is two part. I have:
self gripping vinyl edge trim McMaster-Carr
neoprene rubber bar McMaster-Carr

I'm using gasket adhesive to glue the neoprene to the vinyl edge trim, and then attaching the edge trim to the lens and sealing it into the hatch. I think this is going to work out. If anybody has a better solution, I would be interested in hearing about it. The installation process is a little tedious...

I'm going to blog about the project in much more detail. When its online I'll add a little notice here.

Cheers,
Craig.

Craig,

I was afraid that they were one piece. Not the best design, but we're stuck with it. I'm very hesitant to get into pulling the glass out, I may try gluing a thin sheet of rubber on top of the old one and see if that helps with the sealing.

Also, I asked Thumper at PacSea about the gaskets yesterday, they do not stock them as individual items, but recommended Atkinsandhoyle.com who specialize on port light restoration.
Had the following communication with Atkins Hoyle today. Mentioned the oval to rectangular switch. Looks like they will be able to supply something. From what I saw of their online price list, if the PacSea ones are similar, they're going to run $25-35 per.

Eric thought those port holes were oval. If you give him the gasket cross section size, he can supply you with gaskets. We have 3/8', ½" 5/8" and 3?4".
He will also need size of port holes.
Thanks Janice Atkins

I've uploaded some images of one of the gaskets I extracted from my portlight. All of them are in roughly the same condition - its a 20 year old boat, its to be expected. This was from one of the four larger portlights.

The link is: MobileMe Gallery

Hope that makes it through. Feel free to download any of the images and then zoom in for more detail. For scale, the channel fits the lens, which is 1/4".

These are moulded, not just linear extrusions. It would be fantastic if Atkins Hoyle could provide these gaskets.

Cheers,
Craig.

portlight project almost done...

Hi,

I'm almost done with my replacement project for the rectangular portlights on my 1990 PSC 37. If anybody is interested, I've blogged about the project. The post is rather long and contains pictures so excuse the external link.
