I am in the market for a boat and a late 80's Pearson (36, 38, 39) is on the list. My concern is the position of the engine. It appears that unlike the traditional below the steps set-up the engine is sitting in the middle of the cabin under the galley sink. Is there alot of noise and heat from this set-up and what about maintenance and shaft alignment. Basically in your opinions what are the pros and cons with an unusual set-up like this. thanks

Preface: I'm not a Pearson owner. I have chartered both the Pearson 34, and the Pearson 36 at different times.

The engine access under the sink is not any noisier than the P34 with the engine under the steps. There really isn't a difference in the heat output into the cabin either.

Maintenance, however, is the only real difference. Because of the design, it is hard to reach anything on the front, or right side of the engine. Therefore, access to the dipstick, or reaching the fuel line bleeder nut under the sink looks like a real PITA. On the other hand, you can very easily reach the transmission oil level check. Access is great for the left, and rear of the engine.

Older Pearson models used a "V" drive unit. While this usually allowed easier access to the engine, it is one more thing to service and break.
