Now that Irgarol is no longer being made, Pettit have reformulated Pettit Trinidad SR. The old stuff cost about $280/gallon. The new stuff is $450/gallon. Looks like boaters are getting screwed again.

I also notice that my usual yard wants $2200 to apply 2 coats of Trinidad SR to a 32 ft boat. It was $1500 a couple of years ago.

What are they substituting for the Irgarol?

Check out Defender.com
With the Interlux line, they apparently overstocked Micron-Extra, etc. in anticipation of the impending Irgarol withdrawal.
I phoned Defender to 'verify' that the Micron-Extra did indeed have Irgarol ... yes!
The wording has been added to their website page for Micron Extra: "Original Formula Containing Irgarol "
~$234/gal. + Interlux rebate of $20/gal. = ~$214/gal

Many outlets have stocked-up on paints (including Trinidad SR) containing Irgarol. If you are hauling now for paint, you shouldn't have too much trouble. It's those who plan to haul later this year or next (or beyond) that will not be able to get it.

BTW- I have been informed by multiple sources (including a national rep for Interlux) that Irgarol may very well be produced again down the road and that the stop-gap measure will be to increase the copper content of those affected products.

Well if the $450 is right, it looks like Pettit have priced themselves out of the market. Who's going to pay that if they can get Micron Extra for $214? Or Micron 66 for $250?

Maybe Pettit would rather push you towards the Hydrocoat range.

I'm hauling next spring. Maybe I should buy a couple of tins of paint, right now?

This has been talked about in a few other threads, not this paint per say, but that BASF has canceled the production of Irgaral. When they bought the product, they did not reup the tests etc to keep it in production for bottom paint use. Depending upon the where you get paint, this may go away in a hurry. WM for the most part is sold out, OR< it is under lock and key to go to the yards that they sell to wholesale only.

So the answer is yes, limited supply, if you can find it, great, if not, your screwed. Within the industry, there is hope BASF WILL put the herbicide back into production after going thru the testing with the FDA?!?!?! iirrc. This could take 6-12 months before back in production etc. So as noted, all of the manufactures have started putting in more copper, which is probably why the paint is costing more. Some have gone from 40 to as high as 47-48% copper, paint has gained 4 lbs of wt due to the extra copper per gallon.

Just last Friday I bought two gallons of Trinidad Pro SR, total cost including shipping was $425. Probably "old stock" but hopefully does the job for a few years.

I've been looking for a good price on this stuff for a few weeks now. This was the best I've found by $50+ so I took it.
