Hello,

I am looking for any information, manuals, history, drawings, photos, etc. on the Point Jude 16 daysailer. Please feel free to post any information or materials to this thread.

I own a 1989 manufactured by Starwing.

I have posted some information from various online sources below.

Description:

This beautiful daysailer was designed in 1946 by Edson Scholk and over 1,200 boats were built. Clearly, this boat was intended with stability, safety and comfort in mind. Dinghy racing was not on the designer's mind. The 525 lbs hull should keep the 136 sq.ft. sailplan well behaved and stable.

Many well-loved and maintained used boats appear to be available at very reasonable prices. The chined hull will make for relatively flat and dry sailing.

Great Lakes Sailmakers, at least, offers replacement sails in traditional tanbark color.

I have a cockpit drain in my Point Jude (given to me)...anyone know how it works?

Just bought a Starwing Point Jude, dry slipped in the DC area. HIN indicates she is serial number 003, manufactured in Aug 1989. According to https://opencorporates.com/companies/us_ri/000040659
Starwing was incorporated in Newport, RI in Nov 1986 and disolved May 1991. That's about all I could find (pre-social-media days).

Sailboatdata.com says they were manufactured by Holby Marine, which started in Bristol, RI, got bought out and moved to Maine in 2017, but I haven't found any Holby Point Jude's in my amateur sleuthing. They also reference a Class authority in North Kingston, RI, but the store address used is also out of business.

The boat is great, I have taken her out twice on my own in the Potomac. I think the cockpit drain is just for use out of the water, mine's not a siphon or self-bailer.

We recently acquired a used 1989 Starwing Point Jude. It came with the manual, which I will try to scan and make available when I have time.

We are pleased with the boat so far. It needs some TLC, but nothing major (that we’ve noticed). Big step up from our 8’ dinghy to a boat big enough for the whole family, and there is a learning curve as none of us has much experience. In the near term we will only be sailing on a small lake in New England.

I agree with Gostaman, the cockpit drain is probably meant for use on the trailer. There is a bilge of sorts between the after part of the cockpit floor and the floor of the aft storage compartment, but I don’t think it is connected to the drain. There is a transom drain plug in the aft cuddy which would drain this bilge if there were a lot of water in it and if the stern were sitting low enough (might only be the case while you’re on the boat ramp). The manual does not mention the drains.

According to sailboatdata.com the design was "First displayed in Edson Schock's How to Build Small Boats."
I found used copies of the book available on Abebooks.com, I think, when I looked for it. Alibris.com would be another good place to look. Or you could try bookshop.org or Amazon or Google Books.

It isn't clear from what I have seen that the book contains the complete design, but it's the best starting place I can suggest.

Hi MinivanX I would be willing to Zelle or PayPal you a couple bucks for a scan of the StarCraft manual to the Point Jude. I rigged her for the season and took her out a couple times, really fun, but interested in the heritage and her makers thoughts on how to rig and sail her. Another unsolicited photo, flying the Naval and Maritime flag of the Commonwealth of MA over the riverbanks of the Potomac.

Hello. I recently purchased a Starwing Point Jude and would like to obtain a copy of the owner's manual if you if you are able to make a scanned copy.

Hey that’s very kind of you, but I will gladly do it for free. Real life intervened and we haven’t gotten to hardly any of the things we wanted to do for the boat since last summer. Unfortunately I think we will be lucky if we can get it into the water for more than a week this year. We are in the middle of moving and the docs that came with the boat are packed away. I will make myself a nudge to try to do it next time I and the manual and the scanner are all in the same house.

nice pictures by the way. The woodwork on your PJ is definitely in better shape than ours.

Thanks - there are no obvious differences between this and the documentation I have, except maybe some of the wordage in the "Dear PJ Owner" letter migrated into the booklet itself.
