Forget it and get the electronic conversion kit from Moyer or Indigo.

thanks for reply but not my boat I am helping a friend he does not want to spend that much money
Originals from Moyer cost about 30.- for points AND condenser. I don't want to sound snobbish but if that is more money that he wants to spend for a rather critical item, there is a good chance he will not be a happy boater.

Points, condenser and rotor $50 - every year.

Electronic conversion $112 - once.

It's generally referred to as a no brainer.

Mast is right - if your friend can't afford $60 for the difference then he can't afford a boat big enough to have an inboard.

Points, thats a classic. I once had a '74 911 Porsche with points, cap, and rotor. I fussed with that for one tune-up and did the conversion. Pretty much set and forget. Had to replace the cap still. But so what.

Well, I haven't changed either points, condenser or rotor in the last 15+ years. I had to replace the coil (of unknown age), though, but my understanding is that this has nothing to do with electronic vs. traditional ignition. And I thought that one needs a cap even with electronic condition. Am I wrong?

I have nothing against electronic ignition and I may change to it at some point but I am impressed how the simple, early 1900s technology works

wow the Indigo ignition is $250.00 my friend is 87 years old and money is tight in the very near future he will be selling the boat as it has become a burden for him so we are just trying to get it running. At the same time I have finished eating all my Peeps and chocolate eggs racking my brain trying to figure out how to get the old fuel out of the tank. There is a line that comes to the fuel filter if I disconnect that line and vent the tank by removing the fuel fill cap would it drain the tank? I disconnected the small line going to the carb and the gas was brown so it has to go. Any other ideas would be appreciated. Also points condenser new distributor cap and rotor are $36 bucks. The boat is a 36 ft. Erickson 1973

Whenever I felt my gas had been sittin too long, I just went to a local airport and picked up a few gallons of AV gas (110 octane). It had the second benefit of cleaning the fuel lines and carb (if not too badly gunked up), sometimes saving me the odious job of a carb rebuild. Not always, if old fuel has been sitting in the carb for a long time. Sounds as if the points can be cleaned and regapped, dist cap and rotor cleaned if you want to save money, but w/o a carb rebuild, I'm afraid you'll be spinning your wheels.
If it has been a long time since the boat was run, then count on a new set of wires, too.
But you could save yourself all that work (except cleaning the tank) and money, if you just chuck away the gas engine and install a diesel. No point, plugs, distributor caps or spark plugs or wires! lol

What kind of a spendthrift buys NEW POINTS?

You don't buy new points, you buy an ignition point file and simply polish them back into shape for another 10,000 miles.

If you don't have an ignition point file and you're REALLY scrimping, you take a piece of 400-800 grit wet-or-dry sandpaper, fold it over so it is grit on both sides, and slip a hacksaw blade in the middle. Then you file away, same as you would with the real tool.

Two minutes work, no scrap, no waste. Can be done many times before those points are worn out.

great idea hellosailor where were you before I spent the $36 bucks? What's your idea on the fuel removal add two stroke oil and sell it as such?
