I heard about a marina doing a movie night by projecting onto a large mainsail on one of their boats.

I thought it might be fun to try this one night with the kids while anchoring out on a windless night. Our main isn't gigantic on our Cat 27 but could handle a movie.

Has anyone tried this? Do any of the portable projectors work well enough for this application?

Josh,

We have attended parties like this. It was on a large cat using an older bulb type projector back in 07. Used a lot of Ah! But was FUN! Other boats pulled along side in dinks.

We also do something like that on our 27 Ft. But a bit different. I got an LED projector for about $100 a couple of years back. It runs off an internal battery for about 2 hours. I run the audio through a small FM transmitter into the ships radio with cockpit speakers.

The LED projector in not all that bright, BUT we got a super way to get around that. I was at a Good Will store and found an old roll up projector screen. Remember the ones from school that they showed super 8 movies or slides on? I took it apart and just kept the screen part rolled on a dowel rod. We hang that forward in the cockpit and show the movie that way. The real screen makes a MAJOR difference! AND, I can take it to the beach for pot luck and after sunset movie!!!! :D

Pretty nice idea! I might follow this thread! My husband had thoughts for a backyard screen to project movies on and I think an old sailboat with sail up against the barn might be a real cute idea - if it's not real windy! ;)
