From a google search on it, it appears that you can not get a propane tank re-filled in NYC, at least not while you wait, since it appears that it isn't legal to do so anymore.

I searched and I called for you on this interesting problem. The best
answer I found came from calling this dealer:

Mc Kinney Welding Supply CO Inc
535 West 52nd Street, New York, NY 10019
(212) 246-4305

He explained that there is no one in the 5 boroughs that refill
barbecue propane tanks, but exchange only. I explained it is a special
size and he said it can be dropped off, they will send it out to be
refilled and the process takes about 2 days.

I am amazed!

I called Weber Grills, I was so taken a back by this answer.
1-800-446-1071

They had never heard of there being a problem like this. They searched
Manhattan zip codes to find no service. Put me on hold to see what
they could find and came back to tell me that you have to go to New
Jersey! They no longer can even ship fire starter cubes or barbecue
lighters through the US Mail since 9-11 and New York does prohibit the
refilling of propane.

Do try McKinney. They may be your best bet.
Island Greenery on Long Island can probably fill your tank as well...
2749 Grand Ave,
Bellmore, NY 11710.

Another option would be:

H. K. Buzby & Sons

Lebanon, NJ 08833

There's a cool dude in Jersey City on Route 440 fills mine just fine. Trick is, getting it back though the tunnels. Big time illegal. GWB is best bet.

There's a place in Hempstead out on Long Island that refills your tank while you wait -- even had a reduced price for refilling a 10 pound tank versus a 20 pound one, IIRC.

If you sailed here, are you without a car?

AFAIK, it is a law that only applies to NYC..not New York state in general.
Not Legal to fill a propane tank ? That seems odd. would that be a city ordinance ? I lived in NY outside of the city for many years and don't recal refilling Propane tanks being prohibited. Is this something new?
just curious.
