Hi there;

Embarrassing but I'm trying to calculate distances available and distance per gallon for a 35' Yorktown sloop that has a Volvo Penta MD11c engine and holds 70 gallons of diesel. I'm planning to take her up the west coast from San Diego to Blaine, WA this July/August and am trying to figure out some costs. Thanks and sorry if this is the wrong place!!

On my 30 ft. boat my md11c burns about .6 gallons an hour. My boat is 12,800 pounds. I have a 42 gallon fuel tank. Those numbers should give you the information to make an intelligent guess.

You cannot really work out distance per gallon on anything such as a boat as you will affected by winds and tides. Best you can calculate is available engine run time for a given amount of fuel.
See if you can find data on your particular model engine, from that find out it's fuel consumption per hr @ xxx revs. Usually running your motor at about 75% power gives (if it's a diesel) will give the optimum for speed/consumption ratio.
There's other variables to consider as well. How clean is the hull, how efficient is your prop.
Try to get a ballpark figure of the per hr consumption of your motor at optimum revs. Then do several "legs" and see what log speed you are getting.
Once you've got that add 10% for a safety margin.

We have a 35 ft C&C with a Yanmar GM30. Our fuel consumption is about .75 gallons/ hr at 2700 RPM which is where I generally run it on long trips consistantly. 300 RPM sause about 1/14 gallons per hour.

As stated wind current and sea conditions will affect distance per gallon so that is not as accurate to calculate
