I am geting ready to replace my raw water strainer and all the hoses and fittings from the thru hull to the impeller pump. The engine is a Westerbeke 27A. I can't find anything in my parts and operators info that specs what size strainer and hoses to use.

The present "system" is a 5/8 ID reinforced garden hose from the seacock to the strainer, and a 7/8 ID hose from the strainer to the impeller pump.

I am thinking of going with a Groco ARG 3/4 strainer and 3/4 in hose. What does your boat have on it, and what would you suggest I use? Is 3/4 inch large enough for this engine?

The hoses from seacock to strainer, and from strainer to raw water pump, have suction on them and hence can collapse if the intake gets a bit blocked. You need proper Trident reinforced hose, like this :

Trident Flex Marine Wet Exhaust Water Hose

Garden hose is not going to cut it.

I also use it for the rest of the raw water system.

All the hose from the through hull to the raw water pump should be the same size, or larger. What is the diameter of the through hull for the raw water supply? I'd contact Westerbeke and follow their instructions.

Westerbeke's website has manuals and drawings for most all models present and discontinued. The drawings should indicate the inside diameter of the hose fittings on the engine. You should not go smaller. It would just make the impeller work harder to get the water through the cooling system.

Westerbeke's Installation Manual has all the data on hose sizes and material for their engines and generators and thats available on their website. However, at your suggestion ,we will now add it to our operator manuals. Of course the I.D. of the hose would need to fit the O.D. of the raw water pump nipple.

PlumBing has always been my least favorite DIY thing to do. If anyone has a douBt just look at the BBBBB. Here is the ruB--- when you start with a 3/4 threaded fitting and connect to a 3/4 hose the hose barb is reduced to 1/2. If you go to a full flow 3/4 fitting you have to go to a 1" hose !

Now Westerbeke specs a 7/8 hose into the impeller. OK fine---now try to find a thru hull, and a strainer to work with a 7/8 hose???

I am sure it could be done by using a bunch of reducers etc.etc.

Try to find 7/8 hose and fittings---good luck. Maybe I should have been an engineer so I could make things overly complicated.
