Has anyone used the Raymarine i40 along with the provided rotovectra wind transducer?

I see the transducer appears to just be a DC generator or high pulse count photo interrupter as it's only a two lead unit. To detect direction the instrument must see a pulsation in the signal caused by the flap on one of the cups. By seeing a higher voltage/pulse rate when the tang is on the downwind side and a lower voltage/pulse rate when the tang is on the upwind side of the shaft. The average being an indication of speed. Kinda ingenious really.

My question, does it work in the real world? Has anyone used this system and do they like it?
