I've a question. How much clearance from shaft coupling is require for removal of KM2P gearbox from 2GM20F? Best as I can tell, I've about 1-1.5" clearance.
Is this sufficient for me to pull the gearbox?

It would be one heck of a design failing if you had to pull an engine out to get a gearbox off the motor.

It should not be necessary to take the shaft coupling off either. They really can be rock solid on the shaft anyway.

Typically you take the flexible coupling off and away then pull the shaft as far aft as it will go and it is supposed to leave enough room to get the gearbox off. On the Volvo MD17C there are spacers that tend to drop in to the bilge when you pull the box off the motor, so be careful.... the Yanmar may have spacers in there too so get ready to catch them.

aa3jy, thanks for the manual.
Rockter, you're right, page 201 says I can remove the gearbox without lifting the engine.

On the Volvo MD 17C it is not difficult. If it has not been removed for a long time it can need a bit of a thump with a mallet. Four bolts hold the Volvo 'box on, if I remember. It went on again without a problem. You may find old chart paper useful for gasket material if you have to cut one yourself. remember to tighten the bolts slowly and diagonally.

Remember to re-fill with oil !!!

To check that it is working OK, give it a "dry run" before you re-couple the propshaft. You don't want to see a leak after you have recoupled it all again.

I pulled mine on a C&C33 and replaced it after a rebuild. Not difficult. Clean the shaft before backing it off through the stuffing box (we were in the water at the time), a bit over an inch will do as I recall.
If sending it out, make sure to note the position of the shifter arm - ours was reversed 180 degrees from the usual to accommodate the pedestal shifter F/R direction. The shop put it back together the "usual" way which inverted Fwd/Rev. Spent two weeks vacation shifting very carefully until I could pull it again and have them fix it right way around.
