Anyone ever change out the transmission on a 37?

Wondering if the engine needs to move or if moving the shaft back 1" or so is enough.

Also, is replacing it any harder than an alternator, fuel filter, fuel pump, wiring harness......

I too had the Univ.5432 with the Hurst Trans. and I developed a trans fluid leak.Called Univ.engine dealer Helpline (Hansen Marine) was informed that in order to unbolt the trans from the engine the engine must be removed from the boat to access the bolts which are inside the bell-housing.Very poor engineering by Universal.Since my engine was from 1982 with many hours on the clock I decided that if the engine was coming out then that engine was not going back.I pulled the engine& trans and replaced with a new Beta 37.5hp and never regretted that decision.PS I sold the old engine on ebay.

good luck,

Thanks to all! Nifty...kinda hoping I don't have to replace engine. The 5432 is working fine. The older post indicated the aft end of engine could be lifted 5 inches and the housing removed....hope so! Not sure how to lift the engine. My sole is not the removable kind....yet
