You may want to lube the inside of the strut and the outside of the cutlass with regular Ivory soap in bar form. Once the soap gets wet it dissipates and unlike grease or other lubes will not compromise the press fit of the bearing in the strut.
The reason you would use soap, soap will not swell the rubber inside the bearing if you are sloppy . Oil and grease are both petroleum based and may cause the rubber to swell and cause premature failure. Vegetable oil is often used as well it does not harm the rubber.
