We recently took a test sail in an Albin Ballad. We didn't buy it because we are used to a more nimble boat. But one interesting fact about it was the winches. They operated backwards from any other winch I've used in the past. They were two-speed self-tailers and in first gear they rotated counter clockwise then clockwise in second gear. I use 'first' and 'second' to describe the sequence. 'Second' is the gear with extra power.
For a while I just thought it a bit odd but I've begun to wonder if it's possible to move the gears around inside a winch and reverse its direction. (I think these were Barients, which aren't made anymore, but I've had Barients in the past and I'm pretty sure they worked in the way I'm used to.
Any thoughts?
