Can someone tell me what the purpose of rigging tape is?

Chafe protection, plain and simple. However, I do think some people use waaaaayyyy too much tape.

Rigging tape can also be used to temporarily close up cracks in lifeline coating and to help keep lines from fraying when you cut them.
