Anybody ever hear of the magnets falling loose from the card on a Ritchie compass? Ritchie was good about reparing it, but I'm trying to learn whether it's been a common problem. Having your compass suddenly become useless at the wrong time can wreck you.
My boat has been on the hard all season. A few weeks ago I noticed the compass card was skewed and unresponsive to a magnet. Turned out that 2 cylindrical magnets had fallen loose from the card sometime in the preceding month or so. There had been no damage, impact, etc to the compass. And anyway, I can imagine nothing better isolated from shock than a compass card floating freely in a viscous liquid.
I sent it to Ritchie, and was told that not enough adhesive had been used to mount the magnets, and they fixed it under warranty (it was a couple years old). But I still don't know whether it was a freak occurence, or is likely to happen again.
Anybody ever hear of this before? I hate to just toss it and buy a Plastimo but I'd hate for it to happen in a fog, too.

Our Ritchie has been on board our 26ft trailer sailer for 16 years and thousands of miles without any problems other than the sun faded dome. I'll probably replace it in another year or two simply because it is getting too hard to see. I've relied on Ritchie compasses for 38 years now on various boats but this current one has seen the most abuse by far. When I do get around to replacing it, it will be with another Ritchie unless their quality control has gone down hill like so many companies these days.

That's great, Azzarac. I'm sure you have lots of company. Bazillions of Ritchie compasses are out there, and people whose units haven't failed--most people, I imagine--probably feel loyal.
I guess the issue of their current QC is my point. I'm trying to get an idea of how common glue failures are. I.e., whether others out there have had similar problems, or my experience is just an extreme, freak outlier. Ritchie was good about repair, but didn't answer that question when I asked them.
