I am looking at purchasing a Caliber 33. The bottom of the skeg has a metal plate coming straght off it towards the rudder. There is a hole in the plate on the rudder side and it seems like there should be a pintle stub going into the plate that is attached to the bottom of the skeg. There is nothing coming out the bottom of the rudder that we can see. It seems unusual for the rudder not to be attached to the bottom of the skeg in some way. Is it normal not to have a lower pintel stub and pin socket on these boats?

Your question makes sense, but you will have to find a Caliber 33 owner to find out what their boat has. Sometimes a plate is put between the skeg and the rudder to keep lobster pots from getting stuck in there. Perhaps the rudderpost is big enough not to need the additional support at the bottom.
