Hi,

This is my first thread, this place great for local knowledge, I've learned so much from this place already. I'm a relatively new sailor (I've only taken one proper introductory sailing course and been crewing with friends off an on for a year or so now) but am ready (I think) to take the plunge. I've identified a boat (a 30' Tartan) in the Los Angeles area and am thinking about relocating down there (I'm currently working abroad, but am an east coast/midwest guy by birth) The plan would be to move to Los Angeles in June, learn the boat, taking some more sailing, coastal navigation courses, and get her ready to sail for 5ish months (hopefully a little less as I'm not a fan of Los Angeles or its expensive live aboard situation) and then set sail slowly down the coast to Mexico and then slowly to central America, where I've got a job lined up (I'm one of those tree-hugging international development NGO worker type guys).

Thats the background, now here's the real question. Is the weather in October or November around Southern California hospitable for heading south to Mexico in? I'd ask a local guy except that I'm currently working in Asia and there aren't that many Southern Californians hanging around here.

I am aware that this plan, considering my sailing experience, is pretty high on the the idiot/risky/"your in way over your head" scale, but that's exactly why I am posting this to gauge my own sanity, but more importantly, and practically to find out if the weather around Southern California in October/November is conducive to a slow southern sail down to Mexico.

Thanks in advance,

Not a local, but my understanding is that most people wait til nearer the mid/end of November before heading south. There is an equivalent of the Hurricane season in these waters.

Two separate sets of friends have done this trip this past winter, and they definitely did not head south of LA/San Diego til sometime in November.

Thanks for the reply, leaving in late November actually suits me just fine, the later the better.

Cheers
