Sounds more like someone with mental health issues.
That is the most likely explanation. Either that or extreme desperation.

Wasn't there a guy who tried to sail from San Franciso, on a boat made from milk cartons?

It is to my understanding that he didn't get very far either.

Maybe we should have a thread on the "dumb & dumber sailors"??

That has to be some kind of record only 2995 miles short of his goal wonder how long before he tries again.

I can name a couple of well founded 'expeditions of circumnavigation' out of Victoria that didn't make Flattery. Even after all the media lead up and hoopla at the send off ,Duh!! Lots of reasons for not succeeding ,mental illness is only one. Self delusion works too. Unrealistic dreaming is on the list. Ring a bell?

Mentally ill, I am afraid.
Mental illness to that degree is horrible.
I have seen it once, and the poor soul just cannot think straight nor correlate danger and they don't want help, they say.
Sometimes you can do more with kind words than all the medicines available to us.
The law in the UK is such that they can "section" (under the Mental health Act) the man for his own safety.
It is good law, applied carefully.
