Sailor rescued, boat lost off BVI

Do we know what kind of boat it was? He's an experienced charter captain and broker, mostly catamarans, I believe.

I wonder if he could have used the raw water intake from an engine to remove water at a faster rate, while effecting some sort of fix for the leak.

Well it was a theoretical question, since we don't really know the cause or the source of the leak.

Zanshin mentioned that he has 30 holes in his boat. I had a plug tied to every thru-hull in my boat. And as Paul mentioned, I also carried a crash mat that might at least slow the in-flow until I could find and try to plug the hole somehow. It could take time to check every thru-hull on a boat that size.

His bilge pumps were working, but not keeping up. That's why I thought of adding the engine raw water intake as an extra pump to buy time. He had two 47 hp engines. I'm not second guessing the man. I just viewed it as a thought exercise.

I have thought about such situations on my own boat. I thought I could use one of the many wooden boards I had onboard braced up to a hole, with something soft like a life jacket , a pillow or a cushion stuffed in. I had extra inflatable life jackets as well. Maybe stuff one side into a hole and inflate it. I had a fair amt. of tools on board. Hammers, saws, C-clamps etc. as well as the usual array of tools. Luckily I never had to face his situation.
