In my ever search for a small pocket cruiser.. I have been looking at the Sea Sprite 23. Traditional looks and performance from a well known designer (Alberg) ruggedly built (some are 50 years old and still sailing) and cheap.

My question is.. I have seen four engine configuration on them and I can't find rhyme and reason for why what boats have what configuration.

Configuration 1: inboard. Seems the rarest of the engine placements and the one that gives the SS23 the best performance as it balances the boat puts the weight down low

Configuration 2: Outboard in a center well off of the stern.

Configuration 3: Outboard in an offset well off of the sterm (Seems to be to the port side of the boat)

Configuration 4: Transom hung outboard. I think this is something that has been done by owners long after the boats left the factory.

The positions of the outboard in Configurations two and three confuse me. It almost seems random which boat got a centre well and which got an offset. I checked out the Sea Sprite Website/forum and could not find an answer.

If I get one,, I am probably going to fill in the well and make a full lazerette. I would get a copy of the CD Typhoon's outboard mount and use that instead

I think you're forgetting two other possibities. 1) You can leave a tiny engine in the bilge or 2) you can leave the engine home in the garage. This Yachtworld listing shows a Luders that is nearly identical to one that was moored next to my cruiser for nearly 15 years. In the yachtworld listing you can see a photo of a trolling motor kept in the bilge.

The boat that was always next to mine never had a motor. When the wind died he would sometimes ghost in slowly, but more often someone would see him parked in the water and offer a tow. You meet the nicest people that way. I towed him home several times myself. I never minded and it got me a ride on his boat later.

You're considering a very pretty boat and each of the 4 options you suggest really detract from the look of the boat.

the beauty of the typhoon's mount.. it is totally removable. There are some areas where I want to go where an engine is required.. by law. If I want to sail from here to the chesapeake.. which is in the plans, I am not allowed to raise or use sails in the C&D canal. At least if I use the Typhoon's mount.. once I no longer need the engine, I can stuff the whole thing in the lazerette and forget I have it.. at least until I need it again:)

A friend is selling his sea sprite. It's listed on sailing texas web site. The boats in Nebraska now but will be coming to Michigan this spring.

I found one in RI for 2000.. going to have a look next week. I do not mind a project if I can make the boat into what I want

Mad Machine you should swing by my place in CT (near the RI border) and check out my Offshore Yachts Halcyon 23 - it has a westerbeke 11A inboard and it's a great pocket cruiser - needs a bit of work but an interesting boat for a bargain price! I'll post photos if you are intersted - I think it's a project worth doing - if you are handy which I found out I'm not.

Nice looking boat.. but I am looking for a full keeled pocket cruiser. Long term plan is to move up to a Cape Dory 36 or an Alberg 37 in a few years and move aboard.. so I am looking at the Typhoon and Sea Sprite as a way to get into both cruising and to get used to a full keeled boat.

I currently have a 14foot centreboarder... so I need the experience

Sea Sprite 23s were made by a succession of builders. Earlier boats have outboard wells offset to port. Later boats made by CE Ryder have centerline outboard wells. Transom-hung is not a great option because the cockpit does not extend anywhere near the transom so starting and shifting would be a major pain and you'd have to leave the helm to do it if you're single handing...could get exciting around a dock! Hanging a 60# motor off the transom would really disturb the trim of the boat and it would be more likely to pop out of the water in waves. Inboards were made, but they're rare and generally expensive. Inboard engines are more difficult to maintain and winterize than outboards.
