I am about to rebed my stanchions and I have heard recommendations to use 3M sealants ranging from 101to 4200. What experiences and/or observations have people out there to share? I already know to stay away from 5200.

I have alway used Sikaflex 291 - it's the best!

Sikaflex®-291 is a one-component, low viscous, medium modulus, polyurethane-based sealing/adhesive compound. This all-purpose grade is used for general sealing applications such as deck hardware and equipment.

SikaFlex 291 or 3M 4200 are good choices. For stanchions, you can also, often use, butyl tape. Please note, butyl tape is what you get at a glass repair shop, and comes on a roll with paper backing, not in a tube and is not a caulk-like product, and looks like this:

sika 291 is excellent, but will yellow if exposed to sun. for sun exposed areas sika 521-uv is just as good and will maintain a color.

3m 5200 is an excellent *adhesive*. I did not like their products as sealants, though. YMMV.
