I am trying to come up with a wind vane, also, and have been considering the Hebridean kit. Would be interested to know how it has worked out for you. A couple of my concerns were with the course changing setup, and looks like the oar only comes out of the water, but is still sticking out waiting for a hit in harbor. I have done a lot of research on it, and only find Tamie Norie as having problems with his. He may have it sorted out by now.

I am also looking for used vanes for sale. The high cost of new vanes sticks in my craw a bit. So, not sure what I will end up with, yet.

If you have an outboard rudder, don't even think of wasting money on a production vanegear. A trim tab unit can be built for a fraction of the price and it will be much more reliable and functional. Mine worked perfectly from 6 to 60 knots of wind and may have worked just fine above 60, but I feel that it is foolish to leave my fate in the hands of a mindless machine, in extreme circumstances. After all, that's my JOB, isn't it?
Check out the Searunner Construction Manual for plans.

Dufour is a skeg hung rudder. I could go with something like the old Saye rig, but would have to come up with one, then drill holes in my rudder to mount the arms. May end up building one from Walt's plans or possibly a Holland or Hebridean. Need to do something soon, though. Thanks for the reply.

OK. I've been in contact with Mr. Fleming, but haven't confirmed I wanted to try building one, yet. There are some links that have photographs of the build, out there. I may have saved them somewhere, will have to look, or see if I can dig them up again. Thanks.
