Hi: I'm in need of purchasing a sewing machine for sail covers and such. I have done some research on Sailnet and the Sailrite seems to be over whelming the #1, but after going to the Sailrite Forum there seems to be a lot of problems. I received a catalog from Sailmaker Supply and they have a Mini Brute. Anyone have any imput on this one? Thanks for any help.

You might be better off looking for an older Pfaff sewing machine. These were very heavily built machines and are quite capable of tackling most of your boat-related sewing projects. You can often find a Pfaff 360 or 260 in good shape for under $300.

The owner's and service manuals for a lot of the older Pfaff machines is available on-line for free or at very low-cost. Maintenance on them is fairly simple too, since they don't have any electronic "brains".
