I am looking for a used sextant in good shape, nothing fancy or expensive, just so it works. THANX Stan Flower

Davis makes a couple of plastic ones used for instruction. Some use them offshore.

I've owned an Astra for 15 years and have done a grand total of 3 sun lines. It's a good instrument, but for the use I've given it I would have been better off with a plastic one.

If you're just going to mess around with it, save the money and buy a Davis plastic model.

I got an Astra IIIB off Craigslist for $100. I was really happy.

One point...the plastic ones tend to warp if you leave them out in the sun... the metal ones won't. This was a problem that Tania Aebi had IIRC, when she did her circumnavigation and it, the warped sextant, had a bit of a detrimental effect on her ability to learn celestial navigation. :D

For slightly more than the price of a new Davis, you can find a used C-Plath. Better resale value too.
