Has any ever tried dismantling the steering shaft on the YS/Merriman pedestal for maintenance? Mine is quite stiff (or at least it's not exactly free spinning) and I think just needs a clean up and lube. I can find diagrams and instructions for the Edsons, but this is quite different.
All help appreciated :)

(mods - sorry, thought I had posted this in Gear & Maintenance, feel free to move it if you want to)

If this is Merriman/Holbrook of old, it should be a quality unit. Merriman was one company that put itself out of business by building equipment that was bulletproof, so no one needed parts or to replace their gear.
I'm sorry I have no specific knowledge to offer, though sorry.

Indeed, although in the bilge would at least be accessible - you just know that needle bearing is going to fall and get stuck somewhere at the bottom of the pedestal where it's impossible to recover.

Had to dissemble my Goiot steering to replace the bearings a while back, it was easy when I found out how the shaft was secured

The pin pos 12 in this drawing is could be driven out using a drift punch.

Picture after disassembly

Maybe yours is similar :)
