Recently I failed to remove the shore power cord from my sailboat, 1981 Catalina 27, as l left the dock and the cord pulled the female receptacle from the boat. The receptacle is marinco 30A, 125 volt unit. I can reuse it but I understand the the three wires now exposed on the boat are color coded and must be connected to the correct prong on the receptacle. The new receptacles have the color code on them but this older unit has nothing. Any advice on which wire goes to which prong would be much appreciated. Thanks

green is ground. white is common. black is hot

Thanks, I understand that part. But each of those wires have to been connected to the proper prong in the female receptacle. The prongs are not color coded.

If it was me rewiring the receptacle, I would look at least a few more sources. Not all information on the internet is correct.

Go to a pilot shop, there's one at most smaller airports that handle general aviation.

Buy one of the big ribbons that say "REMOVE BEFORE FLIGHT" and pin it on the shore cord. That's what they're made for, reminding you to remove something before you take off.

There is a common saying among electricians. Black on brass save your a**. If you install a new female plug, you should see a brass, green and a clear or silver insert for your wires. Black wire to brass, green to green and white to silver.

Edit- by the way, I did the exact bonehead move about a month ago. Replacing the female plug in on my to do list also.

Tie the cord to one of your dock lines. If you forget to disconnect then you have also forgotten to remove a dock line and you go nowhere.

Right after I get a new boat, I always make a cast-off checklist and laminate it. Thru hulls opened or closed, electrical switches, keys, power cords, organize the sheets and lines, move spare halyards, lifejackets accessible, etc. All boats are different.

While I go around and prepare without the list, the last thing I do is check it to be sure I didn't forget anything. I even have to remind myself to apply sunscreen occasionally and it's on the list.

On my first post I said the female receptacle on the boat had pulled out. Actually the plug on the boat is the male receptacle and the shore power cord is the female end. Anyway, with everyone's help, the problem is solved. Thanks all.

Are you sure? The male plug usually plugs into the dock outlet.

You are correct that the male end of the power cord plugs into the dock side. The female end of the power cord attaches to the male connection on the boat. Thanks
