There is a common saying among electricians. Black on brass save your a**. If you install a new female plug, you should see a brass, green and a clear or silver insert for your wires. Black wire to brass, green to green and white to silver.

Edit- by the way, I did the exact bonehead move about a month ago. Replacing the female plug in on my to do list also.
