Every newbie cruiser should have a copy of Shrimpy on their bookshelf.

Then if / when the worrywobbles set in.

My boat is too small. I don't have enough experience. Why am I out here.

A few pages from Shrimpy usually restores confidence.

It worked for me.

While reading Shrimpy, I kept wondering, if he had asked our astute group if he should go, what we would have advised. No navigation lights (maybe not even a house battery), no refer, no depth sounder (and probably no knot meter), some charts and some road maps, very limited water and food supplies (certainly not enough for a 45 day passage) no dinghy at first and only an engine when half way around. And more, or less that is.
He makes it all sound pretty glib until you realize that he really knew what he was doing, and got pretty good at it as time sailed on.
I really enjoyed reading this, but it does convey the idea of "only mad dogs and Englishmen".
At least he went in the right direction and made all of his landfalls.

This is the mk 4 fibreglass version that I lived aboard for a season on the Deben (east coast uk). I also said her from the south coast to Alderney Island. An that was enough for me!

Amazing little boat that pointed really well. The big stern locker added buoyancy and the sloping cockpit bulkhead meant you could snooze in the sun very comfortably.

She punched way above her weight but she was tiny. As much as I loved her I could not go back.

I read the entire thing. Loved it.

In current day, he'd be told he couldn't go without complete paper and electronic charts, a watermaker, engine with enough spares to sink the boat, etc....

I'm wondering if I may find an Iris if I start looking... Nah.... the wife may object. :)
