Hello noticed a side stay unraveling, failing. It is one of two on each side (Tanzer 27). Replacement ordered. Is it safe to have attached additional jib halyard to turnbuckle as a backup for now? Still have the full length side stay(top of mast) in place.

Thanks

Not clear what you are asking. That should backup the stays to keep the stick up, while you await the replacements. It's not safe to go sailing, with unraveling stays.

Assume you are talking lower shrouds. The mast will stand without them as long as the stay, upper/cap shroud or a halyards are in place. Wouldn't go sailing till the bad one was replaced, however. Upper/cap shrouds aren't necessary for sitting in the harbor but would use a halyard to stabilize the stick especially when going up to replace the wire. A mast won't collapse if supported only at the ends laying on its side on the deck so will stand without all the wires as long as you have at least stays and cap shrouds. Will also stand without the lower shrouds or halyard to keep it from falling over
