Oracle won their court battle, they now are the Challenger of Record. And no reaction from the board.

Is that because the America's Cup is already essentially dead and the Oracle victory has slammed the final nail into its coffin?

I'm interested to hear the general consensus.

I don't know, I think the reputation of the AC went into the light a long time ago

The only good thing about BMW/Oracle winning their challenge is that their contender is a huge trimaran... 90' LOA x 90' beam. :)

The Challenger of Record status puts the multihulls on hold I think. They can work out all arrangements, the one on one race is to solve disputes. I'm looking forward to some kind of racing. I do think the Swiss were trying to rig the game.
Maybe it's a light black hole.

Not much of a match race -- going to be a pure boat-speed exercise. Hard to practice tactics with combined closing speeds of 50 knots. & where will they find skippers? Only the French can sail these things worth a damn. Hooray for novelty, but.... I'd rather see two Catalina 22s rubbing at the marks than a couple hyperthyroidal ORMAs twenty boatlengths apart.

Guess Ernesto didn't have "the best lawyers" after all, eh?;)

The other guys can build a monster trimaran too... :) Then that'd be a speedy match race... :)

I think its fair to say that Oracle never wanted to race in cats. The cat was their reaction to Allinghi trying to grab an unfair advantage over the other competitors.

The AC may be less important to Americans nowadays but internationally that is not the case. (opinion)

Hopefully they will go back to monos though.

Bubb, I take your point re Nascar (we have a similar thing down here) but again, internationally Nascar does not rate.

The America's Cup of course is not about America even though you lot managed to win it a couple :)rolleyes:) of times last century.

This is very unfortunate. Anyone wonder why Nascar is the largest spectator sport in America. Because it has some resemblance of what a person can walk in to a car show room and see. 90x90 sailboat I like to see the show room. My interest is just not there anymore.

Valid point.

My point was more about revenue then about America. Geve me a Beneteau, sponsored by Coor's light, Trojan, and Viagra. I can relate. :D

The liink for Nascar revenue's, the AC could only hope to match.

I don't think a NASCAR car has any resemblance at all to what is in the showroom. Nearly 900hp, and a body you can hardly recognize. The suspension has very little to do with a street car.

The thing NASCAR, & the tri will have in common is pushing the envelope, and that makes for thinking out of the box. Eventually what ever this thinking out of the boxes materializes it will trickle down to us. Same as NASA has handed down glues, and different materials we now use daily.

I like the idea of the multis. I am a multi sailor, so it is a chance to strut the stuff that a multi is capable of. I also crewed out of GGYC for a season, and I am from the S.F. Bay area. Born in Oakland, owned a business in S.F. , and lived there for well over a decade. So I kind of have a homeboy mentality going with this thing.

I have lost interest in A/C over the last couple of races, but my interest is renewed.........i2f

If Dennis Conner was never born the AC trophy would still be in the trophy case at the NYYC, and they'd be racing mono's in Newport, RI...JMO:)

When was the Americas Cup EVER about "Race on Sunday, Buy on Monday"?? Look at the J-Boats of the 30's; Endeavour for example was 130' LOA.

It's was never intended to be a "spectator" sport. It was watched by those who could afford to go out on boats to view it on the water. Only in the last 20 years has it become viable as a spectator venue with all of the realtime computer data, onboard cameras, helicopter views, etc. It has always had courtroom controversy; it is no different today than it was 200 years ago.

My point is that this "sport" does not rely on us (spectators) to keep it alive. It relies on people like Larry Ellison who have so much money to burn it does not matter to them if they have to spend 2 years in court or build a 90x90 cat that won't be raced in against Allingi. In the 30's it was Lipton who tried and tried time after time to win the cup for England; always coming up short.

You may not be able to find space for a 90x90 space ship in your marina, but sooner, or later you will most likely purchase SOMETHING that came from the knowledge of building it.

You may be able to purchase something that VERY slightly resembles a car on the track....this is very true. Not many of us could afford to purchase the car it self. I know I can't, nor do I want to, and I managed to pay cash for my boat......i2f
