Hi All,

When we had the survey and sea trial for the boat we are buying the Surveyor recommended that we use Soltron additive to our fuel, to keep it and the engine happy. Said it is what he used and he thought it was great. Went on to say that it was not critical to be accurate measuring it, too much wouldn't hurt anything.

The boat in question is 8 years old and appears to have been well maintained although not by the owner, he hired out everything near as I can tell. The 38 hp Yanmar diesel engine starts quick, even in cold weather and in the time we motored we had no issues.

I was just wondering if anyone had a first hand experience with Soltron either positive or negative.

Thank you
michael

"""snake oil"" good clean diesel needs no additives....
True enough, but as we all know, good clean diesel doesn't stay that way. It also depends on what you want that additive to do. Kill bugs? Boost cetane? absorb water? Yanmar recommends the FPPF brand of additives and I for one have never even heard of the Soltron brand.

Soltron is sold in the US as a Startron as I recall. It's a light blue additive. I've been using it for about 3-4 years have not had any fuel related issues. Starting using it before leaving to go cruising and never stopped. I run 2 micron primary filters [yes I know the arguments] and have not had a filter issue [based on Racor vacuum gauge] in the time since started using it. I typically replace the filter at about 250 hours when I do an oil change just cause.

FWIW the gas additive does not seem to work as well - I use Stabile for that now.
