I have a Spinlock rigid vang and am having difficulty with the lock/release switch. Should this require a pulley to 6:1 led aft to the cockpit?
Anyone experiencing the same? Got any tricks/ suggestions? Thanks
I've had the same issues with mine.. have had it apart several times and there's no apparent reason why it should be so difficult.
The literature says to make sure the internal tackle is tensioned before trying to release/engage the switch, but that doesn't always work for me either.
Once the main is up it's not usually a problem to release the vang before you sheet the main in. I try to put it in the 'half way' position - it releases the ratchet support, frees it to 'vang' function but is easier to put back into 'latch/support' position later.
When all else fails, when we drop the main my wife holds the boom up until the first third of the sail drops, then she drops the boom until the vang itself forces the switch back to the latch position, then push the boom up and it 'clicks' into place. This may call for pushing the boom outside the dodger to get sufficient 'drop'. Do this gently, btw.. the switch is just a plastic bit, we've had to replace ours after breaking it once.
There's already a powerful internal tackle, we have a 2:1 on the outside of the vang as well - seems adequate.
Is this the same type you have?? I dont have any pully help on mine outside the thins? I just wonder if I should use a block or 2 to help break it free. When should I use the vang? Close hulled?

If the switch 'shows' green (ie covering orange) it's acting as a boom support. If the switch is pushed to show orange (covering green) its been 'released' and is acting as a vang.
If you drop the sail with the vang in 'vang' mode then the boom will drop. If you switch to 'topping lift' first then it won't. It's supposed to self release from 'topping lift' to vang when you pull the vang tackle but mine never has.
Once engaged in the 'topping lift' mode it's a ratchet support.. if you push the boom higher you'll hear the clicks and the boom will stay where you left it. Typically you'll have to go forward and 'switch' the mode. Don't try to force it out of toppinglift mode by pulling on the vang line.
It's a neat idea in concept but it's not working as well as envisioned, they don't make it anymore.
As far as the vang goes, it should be in vang mode once the sail is up, and set to topping lift when dousing, or in very light air where the boom weight is closing the leech. The vang is less critical in normal conditions if you have good mainsheet tension when close hauled, if the traveller is eased a lot you may want some vang on then to prevent boom lift and loss of leech tension. However the vang becomes quite important when you're running deeper, there's little or no downward mainsheet pull and the vang is needed to prevent the boom from lifting, in extreme cases a lifting boom during an accidental gybe can turn into a dangerous 'goosewing gybe'....
