If you live in a tidal area, put the ship against the dock wall, let the tide go out, and have a long look at it.
On my ship, to my horror, the entire cutlass inner rubber element was rotating ON the shaft. It wasn't squealing, but it was rumbling.
Make sure you have plenty of water splash to keep the bearing cool. It heats up very quickly.
