We've had the extremely pleasant occurrence of power boaters slowing down for us and I always acknowledge that on VHF and thank them when it happens.. unfortunately it's not the 'norm'.
More often it's passing unnecessarily close, unreasonable wake, on autopilot/no deviation type of behaviour. On the plus side, though, many of the planing-capable power boats seem to be chugging away at displacement speeds more often (price of fuel??)
