Ever had that happen, like in this video?

I finally lost my rudder and I'm adrift in the gulf of Mexico. I'm not sure what I will do now and will I make it to shore or will I drift for days only to hope for someone to rescue me. The tale of the Skippers Diaries continues with this video and the one after this. Will I make it or not.

I can't hear what he was saying. But he looked pretty calm and able to make a video. I assume he was under-control. It is a good that he did not lose his rudder in the rush hours NY harbor without a radio.

It is not good to lose a rudder in off shore situation, but you will have plenty of time to rig up something to help you to seek safe harbor. :)

how is it the boat is dead calm when he is talking to the camera down below in the dark

how does one have time to make and upload a video "mid ocean" and yet not focus on the rudder

how is he sailing in the beggining if the vid? did he get an emergency rudder installed? and why is that wild and rough seas?

Yeah, that's kind of weird. "My rudder is broken, but instead of fixing it, I'm going to make a YouTube video because that's more important. I can fix the rudder later."

Here is the follow up to the first video. We must save the boat - YouTube Agree with Vega, he probably was in a little over his head. But I could see my self ending up like this. I'm known for getting in over my head and doing stupid s*it. Doesn't look like he was ever in any real danger, a little sensationalized.
im even more confused with the 2nd vid...

Well, a few years ago, I was sailing a Jeaneau SO 37. In the middle of tack, to avoid the barge coming from aft at port, the steering cable broke. I missed the barge by 10 yards as I used the jib to turned the boat around.

After that I used a18 inches long emergency tiller to steer. After that, I don't even I had time to pee in the next 8 hours to bring her back to home port. Let alone taking video for my adventure. :D

He must be very good.

I can't believe it. At the beginning of the first video he says the bottom of the rudder has broken off - he still had most of the rudder. He also talks about the 'terrible, terrible' winds and seas. That is not what the video is showing at all. Looks like a decent sailing breeze at best. I hope when he got back to shore he was able to trade his sailboat for an RV. This guy should not be anywhere at sea.

OK, he seems to be making headway. It is a bit windy, but the sea state appears pretty calm. What is the problem? just rig up a fix on the rudder and go on your way. If that stops you then you should not be out there at all. Says when below "getting tossed around like a washing machine," yet the boat appears to be almost so stable that he could be on the hard. "may be my last video" give me a break, either an exaggeration of the situation or a pure hoax. Of course it could just be an attempt at a home movie version of "all is lost!" Did he video himself shaving? Oh and he is so scared he had to plug in his ipod headphones!

Yea, and the interior shots without a shirt, yuck. Not pleasant at all. He is no Robert Redford, even to a straight man! If it were me and I really thought I was going to die, and this video would be my legacy I would not be showing that much gut! :puke

I liked the "broke the tip of the rudder" and yet, there it is, laying there in perfect placement to be lashed together with something, and rigged somewhere. Hell, strap it to the outboard that is sitting handsomely on the arse end, and steer with that. Not fun, but workable. Nothing in there at all screams "helpless" other than his attitude and apparently unwillingness to do anything even remotely resembling real effort if in such a dire situation. I had those same weather conditions yesterday on the lake. Never occurred to me to jump ship and swim for shore due to the horrible winds...

50 miles north of Key West is "the middle of the ocean" ??? Who knew?

Hell, he probably could have anchored where he was... :)

"Terrible winds and seas", and yet not a single whitecap to be seen...

I couldn't make it all the way thru the first one, definitely the most worthless YouTube I've watched in quite some time... and, that's saying something... :)
