Looking for some assistance on what it will take to repair the clam cleats on my boat.

I'm a relatively new owner of a US Yacht Buccaneer 18 (1982). It is in reasonable shape, but the cleats for the jib sail, located on the center board trunk, are coming loose. Both of them will rise off the surface, about an inch. The screws turn loosely, but are still somehow anchored. They will not tighten.

At this point, they shouldn't be used, as I fear they will rip from the boat and cause unnecessary damage.

What will it take to tighten them back to the boat? Are they back mounted to the inside of the boat, or all of the way through the center board trunk?

Of course, the next question is: what is the best way to get to the back of those screws? There are no side access points to the areas below the cleats, on the trunk. There does appear to be a 2" one for the the main sail cleat, about a foot away.

A picture speaks a thousand words, as they say.

But I suspect what you need to do is get the boat onto it's side, drop the centreboard, and have a look inside the centreboard case. You might be able to see the back of what's fastening those cleats down - probably simply nuts with washers. You might even be able to tighten them up.

Yes it is tough to help without pics, but you say that the cleats lift up by an inch? That could mean 3 things: 1. The cleat was installed with bolts far longer than they needed to be and they have simply come loose. 2. They were bolted through a thick hollow or cored structure and the backing nuts have pulled through the inside layer of glass. Either it is hollow or the core is rotted away. Or 3. The cleats used to be mounted on a riser base that has since broken or rotted away.

What type of pictures would you suggest that would be useful? I have included two pictures of the cleats, but are you suggesting some of the center board case area, under the boat (which I can't get, yet), or of the boat itself?

At this early point, I was hoping to find someone that may have already replaced or tightened cleats like these. The suggestion to roll the boat over, drop the center board, and take a look has always been an option, and I was hoping to avoid that task, if some one already knew if that was a worthless endeavor. I'll probably end up doing it anyway.

In response to a recent memo, from ShockT:

1) I don't think they were too long, as the cleats' positioning was fine for 1 1/2 years.

2) I hope not, but I'll have to lower the center board to determine that answer.

3) Possibly, but the answer would be the same as #2, and hopefully not as hard to correct as #2 might be.

A picture of the whole trunk would be helpful, so we can get some idea of what the structure might be, and where the actual centerboard is in relation to the cleats.

Well it looks like I'll tip it on it's side today. Let's see what's under this thing. I'll work on the trunk area, for pictures.
