Just got back from a wonderful 12 days at Catalina's Isthmus Cove, 2 harbors . I saw these two tall ships . The white one is the Exy Johnson , the other is The Pride of Dana Point . Thought you Sailneters would like to see .

Ah... Unless she's been rechristened or is a replacement for the original, that would be the "Pilgrim", referred to in promotional literature by the Ocean Institute as being "...the Spirit of Dana Point...". To quote from the Ocean Institute's web page:

Today's Pilgrim started her life in 1945 as a three-masted schooner plying the Baltic coastal trade out of Denmark.

In 1975, she was sailed to Lisbon, Portugal by Captain Ray Wallace, the noted marine architect, where she was converted to her present rig.

The Pilgrim entered Dana Point Harbor in September 1981, amidst tremendous community support, destined to become the Ocean Institute's largest classroom. Today, the Pilgrim provides a national award-winning living history program to over 16,000 students a year.

When we lived in SoCal, our house was in Ritz Cove just over the hill north of Dana Point Harbor and often in the evenings we had drinks at Cannon's Restaurant, on the cliffs overlooking the Harbor and Pilgrim. We frequently sailed down to Dana from our home port at the Alamitos Bay YC in Long Beach and spent a week or so anchored in the basin, off Pilgrim's mooring and what is now the Dana Point YC (then a Rusty Pelican restaurant). We met many of the kids that worked on that "school ship" during those years. I can still smell the tarred rigging if I close my eyes and think about it.

Also in So.Cal right now we are having a tall ship fest . All the press can focus on is this giant dorky rubber duck they had shipped in . Only in California !

I've had the opportunity to see one of the last tall ships ouder sail in Galveston years ago. It was so impressive. It really makes you feel like you were born in the wrong century.

We went sailing yesterday and had 30+ knots of wind and there were 3 tall ships having a mock battle and one ship fired its cannon at a passing sailboat, probably scared the keel bolts loose, the ships were in there element with a steady wind and a good size swell too,

I have been aboard the Pride of Baltimore.. it is really a much different type of sailing.

Was aboard the Exy and the Irving in LA while they were fitting out. Had many cannon battles with other tall ships aboard the Thane , my own offering to the tall ship heritage .(I's the bye whot built the boat, and I'se the bye whot sails 'er. See youtube thane sailpast
