Hi,

We are looking for a sailboat to buy and we came across a Tanzer 26 that is full of small spider web type of cracks. Particularly on the port side. Some extend into the side of the hull.

I have never seen this, so I am curious as to what may be the cause.

I attach some pictures that may help to asses the problem. I would really appreciate any information.

Thank you,

Fine cracks in the gelcoat are not uncommon on old boats, and more often than not are purely cosmetic. They do tend to show up around stress points, and areas that flex, like Genoa tracks and stanchion bases.

Having said that, they CAN be a sign of an underlying structural failure, such as rotten core in the decks. At the very least you should sound the suspect areas by gently tapping with a small hammer. Delaminated areas will have a different sound than solid areas.

Thank you SchockT, great information. We are going through a quick learning curve to asses the boats. I hope we get it right in the end )
