I'm new to boating. I made my first overnight trip this past summer, moving our boat from MD to NJ, including parts of the ICW that are generally considered to no longer be part of the ICW (i.e., between Atlantic City, NJ and Barnegat Bay). Even _I_ knew to follow the channel markers and to use the magenta line as a guide. It's a line on a chart, and the chart hasn't been updated since ??? The USCG and local authorities update the channel markers MUCH more regularly. And that's not even the parts that go across LAND! Are people really THAT clueless?

This is a good news. The new "magenta line" will be improved but it will take years to undo the errors that are now contained in the old one. Regardless, it's never going to be inerrant and should never have been treated that way in the past nor should it be in the future. I can't believe that people would actually ignore markers to religiously follow the magenta line but I saw a boat this year that had gone on the wrong side of two markers and was sitting on bottom because they had done just that.

There are many areas along the ICW where if there was no magenta line prudent mariners would have put there own such as through large inlets like St. Simons sound in Georgia or through the marsh country of Georgia and northern Florida. You would have a great deal of difficulty doing these areas with seat of the pants navigation.
