Looking for info or advice - pro or con - on replacing my original stanchion bases with the toerail-mounted bases.

Redoing deck & once Awlgrip cures, I''ll be reluctant to start drilling into my perfect deck & am considering using the toerail bases.

Any info/advice/opinions would be much appreciated.

I have had all my toerail mounted stanchions removed because of corrosion. The bases were in steel and the toerail in aluminium. Now I have the new ones mounted on the deck just inside the toerail without any contact between the metals. It is also better because the toerail provide better protection if we get to close to (say) a pole. I have broken stachions that way...one...two...three...aaah BOAT = Bring Out Another Thousand.

I will fill in the corroded toerail and paint it one day. On my 40 foot boat it does not matter if you move the stanchions in a couple of inches (5-7 cm) but it may be a problem with others. I am very happy with having the two "divorsed"

toe rail stanchion combo

Was reading post and have I36 acquired with new toe rails installed and has stanchions that appear to attach thereto- two blots to rail, two to deck- I still has old stanchions and two with gate support legs that all mount to deck. as to useof rail mount if go that way will place thin leather pad between dis-similar metals, alum & SS, to prevent corrosion. the issue of being further outboard on rail may be problem when close to dock/poles/other boats with yacht rolls ec. Thinking about a mix of old and new at want gates with additional support when life line pelican hooks off. Other thought was while the rail connection may be quite strong due to rail substantial connection- a stanchion hit hard may take portion of toe rail and deck too -obviously best not take any hit- either way deck may suffer damage. main concern is keep crew aboard.
