I have a San Juan 34 with rod rigging and can't seem to find any reviews on the various types of Backstay adjusters on the market. Please share your preference with me based on ease of use, expected lifespan and maintenance. I am looking at the Sailtech or Navtec Hydralic, Harken winch handle and the Wichard ratchet type backstay adjusters.

I had dual Saitech hydraulics on a previous boat and had problems with the cylinders laeking. They replaced them without charge but then the original hoses failed. I'd go with Navtec.

I don't know the names, but I like the type where 2 cables go up to a single one, and a fitting is pulled downwards to increase tension. These are simple enough, and seem effective.

I had Navtec on previous boats, all failed eventually leaking oil, but very easy to use if conveniently mounted (at a rasonable height). Our last boat had Harken mechanical, leakproof, almost zero maintenance, other than flushing regularly, very reliable, but a bit tiring to use ... somethimes I tough turning would never end ..... actual boat has furnling main and I'm happier :)

Hard to beat hydraulics for power and ease of use. Our last boat had Navtec hydraulic backstay, vang, and outhaul... easy adjustment at any time under any conditions.

It would be my choice for a boat/rig such as yours.

Thanks for the replies, Navtech seems to be the way to go in Hydralics but has anyone tried the ratchet type backstay adjuster? From what I read on adds it may be the most efficient way to go for the mechanical type adjusters.

Sailtec

I have a Sailtec 12SI. Came with the boat. Many years old. Still works. Doesn't leak oil, but slowly depressurizes over time. Probably with a new seal kit, the pressure will hold longer.
